Messages from York’s VPs

Provost's Welcome to New Faculty

Welcome to York University!

I am delighted to welcome you to York University, a vibrant community of scholars, teachers and learners. York is proud of its innovative undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts, sciences, engineering, health, fine arts, environmental studies and the professions offered through eleven Faculties; its cutting edge research; and its engagement with local, national and international communities. I hope you will quickly come to feel at home here and that you will share our excitement and pride as members of the York community.

I know that making the transition to a new position can be overwhelming and exhilarating. I hope the information contained in this handbook will help ease that transition. I urge you to take advantage of opportunities to get to know York and its people through participation in mentorship and other collegial activities.

We are midway through the 2010-2015 University Academic Plan that was shaped by the York University White Paper, led by a strategic collegial planning process in 2009.  The three core academic priorities of enhancing quality, student success, and community engagement have informed the objectives and initiatives of the Faculties, and we urge you to read these documents.  As new faculty members, you will be key to our institutional progress and success, and I look forward to working with you in the coming years to make our ambitious goals a reality.

These are challenging times for postsecondary education, but they will also be exciting years for our campuses as new buildings open, new programs are launched, and construction proceeds to bring the subway to York, and as we work to develop new opportunities and partnerships.

I wish you all the best for a successful career.
